Trainers around Europe gather in Bratislava to Empower Youth To Debate Across Europe

Debate is a crucial skill for youth. Like any skill it requires qualified mentors to hone and optimise. IDEA NL is proud to organise a unique cross-border training program to build a European-wide platform for debate trainers.

From the 1st to the 5th of November 25 debate educators met in Bratislava to learn how to empower youth to debate across Europe. Through engaging and interactive seminars they were prepared to give national training events to enhance the critical thinking and civic skills of youth across Europe. Participants came from IDEA partner organisations in Estonia, Germany, Latvia, Lithuania, Macedonia, Romania, Slovakia, and The Netherlands.

In the seminar, modelled after a succesful 6-year national program organised by VDCH and DDG in Germany, participants gain an intensive introduction to key pedagogical approaches. Trainers learn to stimulate youth through effective feedback, learn to set stimulating learning goals and craft effective lesson plans, enhance the quality of their group work, and maintain their own professional and personal development. Trainers will be further supported through a curriculum of lesson plans and a certificiation and accreditation process. Furthermore, an online trainings database is currently in development.
