The Association for for Creative Communication and Debate (ACCD) in Serbia organised two one-day debate seminars for students from Southern Serbia in Deca on the 4tha nd 5th of October. Forty students of between 14 and 15 years old from Bujanovac, Vranje and Trgoviste participated in the trainings that taught them how to use debate in youth activism.
The young people learned about the effective use of public debate in activism and in solving problems such as migration and poverty. They learned how to ensure they can work in full partnership with adults on issues facing them and policies affecting them. Lastly, they learned about the organisational capacities needed to run an activist program, such as needs assessments, implementation of ideas, program management and fundraising.
The students learned how to implement all these activities by desiging a local action to improve the life of youth in their communicities. The first group designed a program to collect education materials to improve the quality of education, while the second one designed an ecology awareness program for their community. The seminars were well received: the evaluation performed by the Institute for Education Advancement showed they were given a 4.92 and a 4.88 on a scale from 1 to 5.
The seminars were organised as part of the project idebateEU. This is a cooperation project of IDEA Amsterdam, IDEA London and ten IDEA members from all across Europe. The project aims to improve cooperation between IDEA and its members and between members, sharing debate methodologies and organisational knowledge in the framework of common activities on European topics. The project is made possible with support of the Europe for Citizens Programme of the European Commission.
