All international participants of the IDEA Debate Exchange have now left Sofia. After the final day of the Exchange on Monday the 1st, and sightseeing for some on the 2nd of August, the event is now over. The Exchange ended with a day full of practice: some practiced organising a tournament, others judging, debating or giving workshops. Still others discussed a new plan for cooperation: an international knowledge academy for debate.

Here’s an example on how a debating society can help improve the quality of public debate. For five years now, the Estonian Debating Society has co-operated with Postimees (Estonia’s largest daily newspaper) in holding online debates. These debates put politicians’ and public figures’ argumentation quality to the test – often by opposing a debate team. The debate is later evaluated by an experienced debate adjudicator, who will scrutinize the arguments and decide the winner. The very first English-language online debate is underway right now, the verdict will be delivered in the evening.

A total of 71 three-member teams participated in the events held in Bratislava (Western Slovakia) on October 18-19 and Michalovce (Eastern Slovakia) on October 25-26.
